Lady Gaga 3D Concert and 3D DVD – according to MTV 3-D

MTV reports that a rep for her music label, Interscope Records, said that “there are talks about a 3D concert and 3D DVD to be released in the near future.” No other information (including how the 3-D concert would manifest) was available at press time.

Late last week, Lady Gaga fan sites began speculating about plans for a 3D DVD, but this is the first time a concert has been mentioned. In December, Gaga released a deluxe edition of her Fame Monster album, which included a pair of 3D glasses that she mysteriously explained would come in handy “for things happening soon. Sexy 3D Dress – Turn your girlfriend into a giant pair of 3D Glasses..

..well you could IF this Halloween costume from Etsy wasn’t sold out.

Go to college in the third dimension – No mind altering substances required!

Does a degree in stereoscopic 3D interest you? Well thanks to the current trend in stereoscopic 3d and the demand that this has placed on appropriately skilled people in the entertainment industry. The University of Southern California has announced their new BA in stereoscopic 3D (at their school of cinematic art). USC has some major 3D industry partners in Sony, HP and EA Games. This is the same place where George Lucas, Spike Lee, Robert Zemeckis and Pixar’s John Lasseter learned their trade (albeit not in 3D -Editor).

The Guardian reports - ‘Scott Fisher, chair of USC’s interactive media division, said the programme was a response to increasing demand from Hollywood studios for candidates with a strong grounding in 3D.’

“We’re getting so many requests from industry to provide them with this kind of background in stereoscopic imaging because they’re making more and more films and need that kind of talent to move things forward,” he said.

The Guardian goes on to say that ‘Rather than wow audiences with flashy visual techniques, USC professor Perry Hoberman said the course would teach students to mimick the way the brain naturally represents the visual field.’

“If it’s well done, you forget there’s anything unusual about it (3D),” he said. “It just broadens the gamut of what you can use to express things.”

This new stereoscopic 3D course is due to kick off October 2010.

FUTUROSCOPE 3D THEME PARK – Stereoscopic 3D Amusement Park in France (re-opening 7th Feb 2009)

How does a Disneyland style stereoscopic 3D amusement park sound? Well, if you live in France the future is now!
It’s called FUTUROSCOPE and features dozens of visually amazing attractions and shows. The entertainment on offer includes a smorgasboard of IMAX 3D offerings including ‘Deep Sea 3D’ which uses the IMAX Solido Technology in which images are projected onto an 800 m² semi-circular screen. Viewers perceive the 3D effect by wearing liquid-crystal glasses, which become opaque (non-transparent) upon receving an ifra-red signal from the projector. As both the left and right eye images are projected alternately onto the screen, one or the other of the glasses becomes opaque, thus ensuring that each eye sees the appropriate image and creating the 3D effect.

Futuroscope has a massive selection of visual attractions utilizing most of todays most cutting edge vison technologies. The park re-opens Feb 7th 2009, in the meantime check out Futuroscopes website.

Giz3D Recommends: THINK GEEK DIY 3-D Picture Frame Kit – Lenticular 3D Fun!
The cool geeks at THINK GEEK sent us one of their lenticular 3D ‘EZ 3D Photo Print‘ Kits for review.. GIZ 3D gives thumbs up!

Amidst the 3D revolution of cutting edge 3D technologies it’s nice to have some fun with one of the older optical technologies, Lenticular 3D. Think of those plastic cards found in some cereal or those plastic movie cups that have a 3D looking image (plastic coated with parallel ridges), well that’s lenticular 3D.

Essentially the ThinkGeek 3D Kit is a plastic photo frame that comes with two lenticular films/sleeves. Using the provided simple software you are able to convert normal 2D digital photos into lenticular 3D photo print outs for use in frame.

We had endless fun in the office with this one and definitely recommend this product of yesteryear.

Results are reliant on how much effort you put in when using the conversion software. For example you can select several individual elements in photos and alter the visual depth. The software is extremely simple to use (similar style to a basic paint program), with a few trials you’ll be able to make lenticular 3D photo masterpieces.

You can really have some fun with this product. I (Ed) have the frame with a 3D photo of my gal on my desk, it looks great.

Product Features

  • Convert your existing 2-D photos into 3-D
  • No Glasses required for viewing
  • Lenticular 3-D technology uses a special filter under which your printed photo is placed
  • Use the included software to define 3-D areas of your photo
  • Adjust the visible depth of each Area
  • Supports text captions with depth control
  • Included frame dimensions are 4″ x 6″ inches
  • Photos can be displayed in either portrait or landscape mode
  • Software Requires Windows 98/ME/2000/XP (Works with Vista also -Ed)

ROME in 3D – 3D Tourist attraction launched (3D Rewind Rome)

While google promotes their online CGI 3D render of Rome constructed by UCLA’s CVR Laboratory. The same technology (from the same lab) is being used to launch a stereo 3D tourist attraction in Rome called ‘3D Rewind Rome’. Located in an old theatre alongside the Colosseum, 3D Rewind Rome takes guests on a 3D journey through the ancient streets of Rome. Guests are given passive 3D glasses and headsets for sound. Reports so far suggest positive feedback from guests, with the Mayor saying that this is the first stage of an amusement park he hopes to construct in Rome over the coming years. Ah.. the irony of a virtual 3D version of Rome.. in Rome.

Well while we wait for the real trailer to James Camerons ‘Avatar’, there is no shortage of creative types (with far too much time) releasing fake clips on you tube to fool the unsuspecting public. Even the release date for AVATAR is causing confusion. Most movie websites like the usually trustworthy IMDB.com are reporting a December 19th 2009 Premier while others say May 22nd 2009. Well get back to you on the correct date, stay posted. Enjoy (or not) one such fake Avatar trailer below..

Not exactly the 3D niche we usually cover but I had to share this new medical technology. We have all been shown ultrasound photos by excited ‘parents to be’ that look more like a photocopy of someones bum than a baby. Well those days are gone with the development of 3D/4D Ultrasound. Like traditional 2D Ultra sound, the 3D4D ultrasound relies on the same high frequency sound waves to bounce back an image from the womb. The advance is in the software used to render the images. Check out the shots below to see an example of the high quality images that can be captured. Now, I am not a father but even I can see how amazing these images would be to an expectant parent. To find out more about 3D 4D Ultrasound check out the links to the right.

3D TATTOO – 1. WTF? 2. WTF? 3. WTF?

Well it’s not exactly ‘gadget news’, but it is ‘3D’ related. Some one with more time than sense has gone and got themselves a 3D anaglyph tattoo. While I guess some credit must be given for originality.. Firstly, I wouldn’t trust just any old tattoo artist to get the complex anaglyph perspective right (the photo barely works, I hope it is better in real life). Secondly, What a crap, cliche tattoo design. Finally, the illusion relies on the viewer wearing 3D glasses. Nevermind, I am sure he carries several pairs of 3D Glasses (with his myspace address printed) that he would be willing to share.
