Dolby is joining the 3D blu-ray standard party by introducing it’s own adaption of the dolby digital 3D theatre technology to be used on 3D Blu-ray disks. They are in good company with TDVision and Panasonic introducing their own stereoscopic 3D blu-ray standards at CES 2009 also (we have our money behind panasonic -Ed).
Dolby says it is currently encouraging various movie studios to use their 3D Blu-ray encoding standard. Dolby is also apparently working on getting its 3D technology used in new stereoscopic 3D video games. Dolby’s home 3-D technology is designed so viewers would not be required to buy additional hardware. It works on any ‘3D Ready’ TV using a standard Blu-ray player.
When it comes to home 3D movies; Unless you are rich enough to afford a Sharp WOWvx 3D Display or another autostereoscopic monitor, you will need to use some sort of 3D glasses. Dolby said its technology would support both passive (polarized) 3D glasses and active 3D glasses (shutters).
Reuters Reports:
The progress of digital home 3-D has been slowed by the lack of a unifying technology standard. Groups including the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) are working on ways to help standardize 3-D home entertainment.
Panasonic has already applied to the BDA for their 3D encoding to become the unified 3D Blur-ray standard. Dolby and TDVision have not.
