CES 2009 – Panasonic spoke it more depth today about their 3D consumer range. Showing off their 103″ 3D Plasma television for the first time in the states (first seen at CEATEC in Japan last year). Panasonics ‘3D Ready’ Display is powered by their 3D Blu-ray standard. As we reported last month, Panasonic has already applied to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) for a Blu-ray Disc standard to store high definition ‘3D Ready’ video. It is worth pointing out that the panasonic 3D display is not auto-stereoscopic, so you’ll have to wear special glasses (like the Nvidia range). Panasonic is calling this 3D Standard ‘3D Full HD’ (3D FHD).
There are many other competitors pushing their own 3D Blu-ray standard but Giz3D would like to suggest here and now that this is the one that will come out on top. To ensure that Panasonics ‘3D Full HD’ takes poll position they have enlisted Titanic Director, James Cameron. When Cameron’s upcoming 3D feature Avatar eventually goes to ‘dvd’ will be released on panasonic 3D blu-ray standard. Cameron is quoted saying “3D is not a gimmick and is ready for prime-time”. But you already knew that -Ed
Panasonic Also announced their new Hollywood Laboratory Advanced Authoring Center (PHL-AC). The PHL-AC opens February 1, 2009 and will be located in the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory (PHL) in Universal City, California (hence the name). The new PHL Authoring Centre has been developed to accelerate, boost and establish the ‘3D Full HD ‘ Blu-ray format. The PHL-AC will work with Hollywood studios to provide 3D Blu-ray titles.
homecinemachoice.com has the following to add:
PHL-AC will feature a Plasma Full HD home theatre system, a 3D-ready digital cinema projector (Theatrical Dolby 3D system) with a 380in screen for picture evaluation and a 3D-ready MPEG-4 AVC High Profile encoder.
‘Panasonic recognizes that for 3D Full HD to succeed, just like Blu-ray, collaboration on research, development and production with studios and content providers is absolutely essential’ said Eisuke Tsuyuzaki, managing director of Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory. ‘Panasonic is working assiduously, with the cooperation of the Hollywood studios, to promote the 3D Full HD system through standardization activities of the 3D format from the Blu-ray Disc Association. The creation of the new PHL Authoring Center will enable Hollywood to start trial production and ultimately create commercially available 3D Full HD titles to realise a new window into reality, and elevate the level of high definition entertainment that consumers can enjoy in their own homes. We expect 3D Full HD to become a reality by 2010.’
