Well it’s official. The battle of the mega animation studios continues. This time the rush to release quality true 3-D productions (not just CGI) is driving the fight. Pixar who has long been in and out of bed with Disney (currently lovers) is planning to release its first true 3-D movie called ‘up’ (in 2009) and re-release their Toy Story movie series in true 3-D under the Disney Digital 3D name. Disney Digital 3D is not a new concept and has had several 3D releases since 2005. But Pixar should breathe new life into to this genre of movies. Fighting back are the other major studios Dreamworks and Universal both working on the new true 3D generation of their popular animated movie franchises. These studios have also been dabbling in 3D for years with Shrek 3D being a DVD extra at least 5 years ago. It will be interesting to see what sort of great new movies the advances in new 3-D technology mixed with the animating power of these studios will produce.
Stay posted as we will publish a full time line of new true 3-D film release dates soon.
PS. It remains to be seen whether or not these movies will utilise new 3-D techonlogies that don’t require glasses. My guess is that glasses will still be required on these pixar releases (though the images wil be drastically improved).
