Panasonic has joined the fun with the announcement of a 3D Blu-ray standard. Panasonic applied to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), for a Blu-ray Disc standard to store three-dimensional (3D) imagery (left-/right-eye two-channel full-High Definition (HD) images). It is also considering submitting a proposal for a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) standard capable of transmitting 3D imagery. The BDA hopes to begin formal discussion on the standard proposal before the end of 2008, with commercial adoption probably in 2010.
In 2008 another 3D Blu-ray proposal was announced by Philips, based on the 2D-plus-Depth format applied to Blu-ray.
Both proposed 3D Blu-ray disc standards can be viewed on both normal stereoscopic (glasses needed) as well as auto-stereoscopic 3D displays (no glasses required).
